Reading Scheme
In the EYFS and KS1 daily phonics is taught using the complete systematic synthetic phonics programme 'Little Wandle'. This draws on the latest research into how children learn best, ensuring that the learning of phonics stays in children's long-term memory. Children are able to apply their learning to become highly competent readers. Children have carefully matched decodable books and spend time decoding, working on their fluency and being able to comprehend what they are reading.
When children have progressed beyond phonics linked books, they move onto a scheme called ‘Accelerated Reader’ which helps their choice to be managed, so children choose a book just at the edge of their comfort zone in order to help them develop as readers.
We have a very well-stocked library to enable a quality choice of books for children to borrow.
In addition to this, all children from Year 1 to Year 6 have daily reading lessons based on whole class quality texts following the CUSP reading spine. This encompasses issues such as equality and diversity, powerful female role models, old and modern classics and books that link with learning in other areas of the curriculum.
