PE and Sport Premium Statement
Vision for the Primary PE and Sport Premium at Stowford School
That ALL pupils will leave Stowford School physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.
Stowford School is very proud of its achievements and provision in the area of PE from Nursery to Year 6. Sport Premium has allowed the school, its teachers and the children to be classed as an Area of Excellence within the Quality Assurance Review, for the last two years.
PE has a high profile within the school. It is taught willingly by all staff (including one PE Specialist) and welcomed enthusiastically by all the children. Each year group receives a minimum of two hours curriculum time which focuses on the new curriculum – a variety of games, skills through the traditional such as Netball and Football and as well as the novel e.g. Frisbee; as well as Gymnastics, Dance and Athletics. Short sessions of Daily Physical Activity are encouraged to break up class based work in the afternoons. All staff teach PE and have their own ‘Stowford’ kit as well as the teaching assistants.
In order to establish expertise in PE, the school has organised a range of training opportunities. Staff can ask for support from the PE specialist to assist them in lessons/with resources. The PE specialist organises and leads CPD opportunities, the most recent being Indoor Athletics. The PE specialist has attended a Pre-School Gymnastics training course that will enhance teaching PE for Nursery children. We have been able to purchase new equipment for the curriculum which has enhanced the PE curriculum e.g. an athletics rebound board.
Huge successes have occurred in a range of sports throughout the Learning Community and South Hams Area. Stowford are Learning Community Winners in:
- Netball
- Athletics (Indoor and outside events)
- Football
- Tag Rugby
Teams have also represented the South Hams in County events for:
- Netball
- Athletics (Indoor and outside events)
- Tag Rugby
Some children receive additional lessons/training in swimming which has allowed the school the opportunity to represent ‘The South West’ at the National Primary Championships.
We have had a real focus on being inclusive within the curriculum. There has been a Fun Fit programme (led by a qualified TA); a programme for those children who have been identified as requiring additional support / input with mobility/coordination. The G&T are able to participate in an Athlete training session led by a member of staff from ICC who is in charge of Athlete Development.
The impact that PE has on the children within the school is more than just the physical: encouraging team work, enhancing self-esteem, developing life skills and promoting the enjoyment of healthy activity.
