Anyone for Tennis….? At Stowford School
Children at Stowford School have had the opportunity to develop their tennis skills with an experienced coach representing the local Iybridge Tennis Centre. The Centre had selected Stowford School amongst others to help host their Tennis Road Show, to raise the profile of their facility as well as to encourage more youngsters to take up this sport.
Mr Leighton, who is a Lawn Tennis Association Qualified Coach, has spent the morning coaching younger children at the School. After a thorough warm up including ‘taking the ball for a walk’, the children then used rackets to work on their coordination and control of the ball through balancing, hitting and aiming games. One of the classes involved was Swifts in Year 3, taught by Mr Green. Mr Green also took part with his pupils and said afterwards that “everyone was excited and enthused by the session. The children learned new skills and smiled all the way through despite the chilly weather!” James, of Swifts class said at the time “I’m learning to concentrate and balance the ball on the racket”
Ms Kee, the School’s PE Teacher and the Ivybridge Learning Community Outreach Co-ordinator, who organised this event, reflected that “this was a fun and active morning for all and we look forward to another similar event again”. All children and Staff at Stowford School are also working hard to achieve the Sainsbury’s Sports Mark Award and this event is one of many that will be happening at Stowford School.
The Ivybridge Tennis Centre are currently offering free taster sessions to children and more details can be found through contacting them directly.
